Intimate wipes — what to look for, what to avoid

Intimate wipes — what to look for, what to avoid

pH-Balanced Intimate Wipes: What to Look For and What to Avoid

Short answer: a wipe is for the outside, between showers. Used externally and fragrance-free, it is genuinely useful. Used internally or heavily perfumed, it causes the problem it claims to solve.

"pH-balanced" is worth understanding rather than trusting. Healthy vulval skin sits around pH 4.7 and the vagina lower still at 3.8–4.5, while ordinary soap is alkaline at pH 9–10. A product formulated near your own acidity works with that environment; one that is not, strips it.

pH-balanced
Formulated to sit near the natural acidity of intimate skin rather than the alkalinity of ordinary soap. It is a meaningful claim when a number is given, and vaguer when it is not.
Vulva vs vagina
The vulva is the external skin; the vagina is internal and self-cleaning. Wipes are for the vulva. Nothing should be used to clean inside — this single distinction prevents most of the harm in this category.
Fragrance / parfum
The most common irritant in intimate products, and often listed as a single word hiding dozens of compounds. Fragrance-free is the safer default for this skin.
Flushable
Means it breaks down in the sewer system. Worth checking rather than assuming — many wipes labelled flushable are not, and plumbers are unanimous about it.
Aloe vera
A common soothing humectant with a long record of tolerability on sensitive skin.
What a wipe is not
Not a treatment, not a substitute for washing, and not a way to fix odour that has a medical cause.

Four questions, straight answers

  • What does pH-balanced mean?

Formulated near intimate skin's natural acidity (~4.7 vulval, 3.8–4.5 vaginal) rather than soap's pH 9–10.
  • External only?

Yes. The vulva is skin; the vagina is self-cleaning. Nothing should be used to clean inside.
  • What to avoid?

Fragrance, alcohol, harsh preservatives, and anything marketed for internal 'cleansing'.
  • When is a wipe wrong?

When there is a strong fishy odour, itching or unusual discharge. That is a clinician, not a wipe.

The Sweet Spot Edit

Questions people actually ask

  • That it is formulated near the natural acidity of intimate skin — around pH 4.7 externally — rather than the pH 9–10 of ordinary soap. A product with a stated number is a stronger claim than one with only the phrase.

  • Externally and fragrance-free, generally yes. Over-use still irritates skin, and a wipe should supplement washing rather than replace it.

  • No. The vagina is self-cleaning and internal cleaning raises pH, strips lactobacilli and makes odour worse. Wipes are for the vulva, which is skin.

  • Fragrance or parfum, alcohol, harsh preservatives such as methylisothiazolinone, and anything with antibacterial claims — you do not want to kill the bacteria that keep pH low.

  • Some are, many are not. Check for a specific claim rather than assuming, and when in doubt bin them.

  • For everyday freshness, yes. For a strong fishy odour, no — that is usually bacterial vaginosis, and masking it delays treatment.

  • Not ideal. They are formulated for a different pH and often contain fragrance. Something made for intimate skin is a better fit.

  • Washing, with warm water externally. Wipes are for when a shower is not available — the gym, travel, a long day.

  • Yes, and the same rules apply: external, fragrance-free, not a replacement for washing.

  • They are pH-balanced, fragrance-free and gynecologist-tested, infused with aloe vera, flushable and biodegradable, 30 individually wrapped per pack. See the product page.
