Vaginal odour — what it means and what fixes it

Vaginal odour — what it means and what fixes it

Vaginal Odour: Causes, Fixes, and When to See a Doctor

Short answer: some scent is normal and healthy. A strong fishy odour is not, and it is almost always a pH problem rather than a hygiene problem — which is why cleaning harder makes it worse.

This page separates the normal from the clinical, explains what raises pH in the first place, and is honest about which products help and which are selling you the cause as the cure.

Normal scent
Mildly musky, slightly tangy, changing across the cycle. Every healthy body has one. The complete absence of scent is not a health goal and is not achievable without harming the environment that keeps you well.
Fishy odour
The classic sign of bacterial vaginosis — anaerobic bacteria overgrowing once pH rises above 4.5. Often strongest after unprotected sex, because semen is alkaline. This needs a clinician.
Yeasty or bready smell with itching
Usually a yeast infection. Thick white discharge, itching and burning, often little odour. Antifungals, not antibiotics.
Metallic smell
Usually blood — around a period, or after sex if there is minor irritation. Normal.
Very strong ammonia smell
Often urine, sometimes dehydration concentrating it. Drink more water.
Rotten or foul smell with fever or pain
Urgent. This can indicate a retained tampon or a more serious infection. Same-day medical attention.

Four questions, straight answers

  • Is some smell normal?

Yes. Mildly musky and tangy, varying across the cycle. Odourless is not a health goal.
  • What is the fishy smell?

The hallmark of bacterial vaginosis — pH above 4.5 letting anaerobes overgrow. Needs a clinician.
  • Why does cleaning make it worse?

Douching strips the lactobacilli producing your protective acid, so pH rises further and odour increases.
  • Do odour pills work?

Little direct evidence. Fixing pH, treating infection and hydration do far more than any capsule.
From daily blends to care essentials — your chemistry, covered.

The Sweet Spot Edit

Questions people actually ask

  • Most commonly a pH shift above 4.5 that lets anaerobic bacteria overgrow. Douching, scented internal washes, semen, menstruation, antibiotics and low oestrogen all raise pH. Diet is a smaller factor.

  • Not always, but it is the classic sign — particularly if it worsens after unprotected sex. It warrants a clinician rather than a supplement, and it is straightforward to treat.

  • No vitamin treats odour directly. Vitamin D supports immune function generally, and vaginal vitamin C has been studied for pH. If odour is infection-driven, no vitamin is the answer.

  • Where the cause is BV, live-strain probiotics have shown benefit mainly as an adjunct to antibiotics, reducing recurrence. As a standalone fix for active odour, the evidence is weak. Full detail here.

  • Very little direct evidence. Correcting pH, treating any infection, stopping douching and drinking more water all do considerably more.

  • Semen is alkaline at pH 7.2–8.0 and temporarily raises vaginal pH. Normal. If it produces a strong fishy odour every time, that points at BV.

  • No. Scented internal products raise pH and worsen odour. Warm water externally is the entire routine, and a pH-balanced wipe is for the outside only.

  • Diet shifts scent at the margin — hydration especially. It will not fix an infection-driven odour, and treating one as the other is the most common mistake here.

  • Usually urine, often concentrated by dehydration. Drinking more water typically resolves it.

  • Strong fishy odour, itching or burning, grey, green or frothy discharge, pelvic pain, fever, or more than two episodes in six months.
